The year of great movies! (& the 1st post not bounded by my grades!)

June 13, 2007

2007 is the year with the most anticipated movies ever, and with this comes my PERSONAL reviews for these movies. I will touch on a movie from the audience’s point of view (After all, the audience are the ones watching) and provide RELIABLE reviews that you can refer to, not crappy reviews from CNA’s primetime morning (Melanie Oliveiro gave Pirates 1/5)

-Pirates of the Caribbean - At World’s End

I was really looking forward to this one. A huge fan of the POTC movies, I was looking forward to Captain Jack Sparrow’s return. With Davy Jones under the East India Trading Company’s control, this movie is filled with lots of epic battles. EPIC is the word, as the movie is filled with lots of sea battles and with a star cast of Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Chow Yun-Fat (Welcome to Singapore ^^) and Keith Richards. This is a MUST watch for those who have watched the first and second.

POTC Fan: 9/10 - Movie Virgin: 3/10 (Wayy better than Melanie’s 1/5)

*For those who have not watched the first or second, go and watch it please. This movie is a final chapter to the first and second, so no point watching as you won’t understand. FOR GOODNESS SAKE, WATCH THE FIRST AND SECOND ALREADY.

-Ocean’s 13

Ocean’s team have assembled for another job, this time for no profit. Instead, they are out for revenge when one of the 13’s got ripped off his share in a casino. Like the previous two, this movie shows how Ocean’s team manage to steal (Sah-boh) the rival’s casino. This includes witty tricks, high tech gadgets and attempts at the impossible. Like what sequels (or triquals) do, they start off from where the last movie ended so if you had not watched the first two, you may have problems understanding but this movie is Movie Virgin-safe so you will only miss out on a small portion. For one, I did not watch the second movie but I managed to catch up with the current plot. Thank goodness its Movie Virgin-safe. Go watch it.

Ocean Fan: 8/10 - Movie Virgin: 7/10

Stay Tuned for Shrek 3 and Fantastic Four 2

Attack of the killer trees (Wk7)

June 8, 2007

Reading the newspapers and watching the news (More like quick browsing), there seems to be quite a handful of deaths by falling trees. No not because they chopped the tree from the wrong side and it fell on them, it totally happened by chance. Some were jogging in parks and there came a tree.

But is this all alarming? Well Singapore is a green city so the more trees in an enclosed area, the higher the chances of trees falling on people? Yes trees have fallen in Singapore. Lots of them. But why is it only this year that they start falling on humans? It maybe karma, or maybe Mother Earth is finally fighting back. But whatever the case, we have been warned. Ever notice when dogs pee, they lift one leg up. Perhaps it acts as a support so as to stop the tree from falling on top of them.

Ok lets face it. Maybe its a new Singapore trend. First there was the Killer Litter incident, then came the MRT jumping last year. Now its killer trees? Lets be realistic here. With a tree in every square inch of Singapore, and every person sharing that space with a tree, won’t the probability of trees falling on humans be higher? And when Singapore did a mass planting of trees in the early 80s, won’t trees age at the same time and with the same surrounding conditions, fall in the same period?

The problem here is not the trees, but the way the media describes it. Killer trees is the headlines? Can’t they come up with a better story? Its a shame how simple stuff like this can prompt such heavy media coverage. Oh well, tragedy is what attracts people, even if its LAME.
